Paul and Marilyn Gess

Ministry Responsibilities:

Marilyn and I have been serving as chaplain at NTM Homes. This is a retirement community New Tribes Mission has for some of their retired missionaries. We minister to over 150 missionaries who have served around the world and there are over 4,000 years of service represented by this group. Because they are now retired does not mean they have concluded any further ministries. So many are still involved with local churches, nursing homes, jails and schools. Many of us feel that NTM Homes is the hub of the mission because of the emphasis and time spent in prayer. Every weekday morning we meet together to study the Word and pray. The retirees know how to pray specifically for needs on the field because they’ve been there.

Marilyn and I never imagined there was a need for a chaplain to minister to these dear folks but even these veteran missionaries face the challenges of growing old. Some experience loneliness while others face pain and fear. Some have financial needs while others share concerns for their married children and their families. Then there are the delicate issues of when not to drive or when is it time to move into a place where they can get needed care. We try to address all these situations and are so thankful God’s Word has the answers for every need. He is giving us the wisdom and understanding we need for each day. It has truly been a privilege to serve those who have served so faithfully. I’m also a member of the administrative committee that oversees the operation of the work here. Over 30 fellow missionaries form our staff made up of nurses, grounds keepers, carpenters, mechanics, and house keepers.

As we serve in central Florida, we still maintain contact with our friends in Bolivia. E-mail is a wonderful way to keep in touch. It has been encouraging to see how the Bolivian people are continuing on with the ministries we left with them. They need our prayers. The country of Bolivia is very unstable politically and is one of the poorest countries in the hemisphere.
