The "inherent law" of God is that universal right of our Creator to exercise absolute authority over all of His creation, especially over mankind. It is based upon His requirement, "be holy; for I am holy" (Leviticus 11:44; 1 Peter 1:16), which means complete separation from evil. Any violation of this perfect standard is punishable by death which is complete separation from God. This applies to mankind in any age, "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23), and "the wages of sin is death" (Romans 6:23).
Adam was holy when he was created, but died spiritually, became unholy, when he disobeyed God's command (Genesis 2:17). "Death reigned from Adam to Moses" (Romans 5:14), spiritual and also eventual physical death, over the entire race. Abraham's faith was reckoned as righteousness because he believed God, true also of all who believe in any age (Romans 4:3-8). This is imputed righteousness, not the result of keeping the commandments of the law. Before Christ came, believers demonstrated their faith by shedding animal blood in anticipation of the sacrifice Christ would make on the cross. Now, in this age, "Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes" (Romans 10:4). This means that those who are "in Christ" (2 Corinthians 5:17) have been created anew in "righteousness and true holiness" (Ephesians 4:24 KJV). The Bible says, "There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and death" (Romans 8:1-2).
The written law given through Moses, is the reflection in earthly terms of God's perfect holiness, and is a standard of life impossible for sinful man to keep, that is, to be holy as He is holy. It is rather the means by which sin is identified, "for through the law is the knowledge of sin" (Romans 3:20). Before Christ came, God in grace provided a covering for sin through the priesthood and animal sacrifices in Israel, including the Ten Commandments and the social and devotional regulations of the Mosaic law. This entire system ceased as a rule of life in this age, superseded by "the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus" (above). But Jesus said, "Do not think that I came to abolish the law or the prophets; I did not come to abolish, but to fulfill (Matthew 5:17). He fulfilled the law in His sinless [holy] life, and then by taking the sin of mankind to Himself suffered death in our place. "He [God} made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, that we [believers] might become the righteousness of God in Him" (2 Corinthians 5:21).
However, in this age of grace, believers must contend with the forces of evil, seeking to obey the will of God in daily living. The life direction of the Christian is found in the commandments of Christ which those who love Him keep (John 14:15). The commandments of Christ are found in His word (John 14:23) which the believer is responsible to learn by searching the Scriptures. But since these commandments are in His love, they are "not burdensome" (1 John 5:3). Those who belong to Him respond to them in loving obedience, following His example "in His steps" (1 Peter 2:21). To enable the believer to do this, He promised "another Helper, that He may be with you forever; that is the Spirit of truth . . . the Holy Spirit . . . He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you" (John 14:16; 26).
