Thanks for your question. If you will look at Ephesians 1:4, the issues of election and predestination are clearly taught as biblical principles. The Bible is not something that can be picked over like a salad bar, with patrons selecting what they will and will not find tasteful. If the Bible teaches it, it must be embraced. Clearly stated, election is that sovereign act of God whereby He chooses those whom he will conform to the ../image of His Son. The basis of this election is never revealed to us. All we know is that it is not on the basis of merit, but on grace and the kind intention of His will (Ephesians 1:5).
Election need not divide brethren when the concept is totally beyond our ability to master. Since we do not know the basis of election, we must serve one another on the assumption that all men can come to salvation through Jesus Christ and therefore share the Word of Christ freely with all. All the while praying that God will use the message of the cross to draw men to Himself for salvation. Clearly on He knows who is and is not elect. This is not for us to decide. Since this is true, why should we argue about it when it is not really our business? All I know is that I am elect since I have come to faith in the Son of God as the only Savior and Lord, and am kept by the power and grace of God as one of His children.
Hopefully this will help.
